Kiwanis Club of Golden and the Annual Parfet Park Easter Egg Hunt
Each spring, just as Clear Creek starts to run higher and the mesas shed their last snow, families from Golden and the surrounding communities converge on Parfet Park for a tradition that lasts all of five minutes—but has been generations in the making. At the center of it, year after year, is the Kiwanis Club of Golden.
Origins of a community tradition
The Kiwanis Club of Golden was chartered in 1921 and has spent more than a century focused on serving children and strengthening the community. In the 1950s, the club added a new kind of project to its service portfolio: an Easter egg hunt in Parfet Park, the downtown green space the club had already helped create and beautify in memory of its first president, George W. Parfet.
By 1953, the Kiwanis Club and downtown merchants were jointly hosting Easter egg hunts in the park, turning what had once been a town dump into a place where children ran through the grass in search of candy‑filled eggs.
How the hunt works today
The rhythm of the event has stayed the same for generations: the hunt always begins at 10:00 a.m. sharp, the Saturday before Easter, and within minutes every egg has been scooped up by eager hands. Families know to arrive early, because thousands of colorful eggs disappear almost as quickly as they’re scattered.
Each spring, Parfet Park is divided into clearly marked zones so children of different ages can enjoy the excitement safely. Once the bell rings, the park erupts in joyful chaos as kids race across the grass, and in no time at all the field is spotless again.
In recent years, the Kiwanis Club of Golden has welcomed support from local Scout troops and community volunteers who help stuff eggs, prepare the park, spread eggs, and guide families. Their teamwork ensures that the event remains safe, smooth, and fun for everyone.
The tradition runs deep. One longtime attendee shared that he has been coming with his family for more than forty years—driving in all the way from Broomfield—because, as he put it, “back in the day it was the place to be.” Judging by the crowds, it still is.
The Kiwanis Club of Golden is proud to once again sponsor and host this beloved community celebration, a tradition that draws returning families from miles around and continues to grow with each new generation. Thanks to our dedicated Kiwanians and all who pitch in, the spirit of this event remains as vibrant as ever.
Please donate to this project! See the Donation button below. We are planning on doing two more of these events this winter/spring for children in the Golden area.
